Talented, daring, and bold Delaila Catalino thinks outside of the box and is leaving her mark in the entertainment industry. In 2010, she launched her company M3 GLAM, to help inspire Latinas in communication and media. With an MBA in Media Management and her go-getter mindset, Delaila Catalino proves she is a force to reckon with. She has worked with brands that include Nail Lounge, 25th and June, Uptown Fashion Week and the NBA Draft and has constantly created her own opportunities in entertainment and media by leveraging her connections. Read on to see how this NYC Latina paved her way in the world’s toughest media industry.

I’m the go to girl for plugging you in, the missing piece in your puzzle. A media connoisseur; I know how to get your message on the platform it needs to be on to get heard. Through the love of beauty, fashion, food and travels, I have created a digital space to bring my interest to people who relate and want a firsthand account of my experiences.

What is a typical day like for you?
No two-days are ever alike. The beauty in that has allowed me to always be prepared. No iPad is ever left behind and calendars are my bible. Meetings during the day and events at night can be followed by a day-long industry seminar the next day. Days are long and nights even longer, but it’s about finding balance. Being a self-starter and entrepreneur you have to wear many hats.
- Wake-up around 9:30am
- 9:30-10- Emails are checked and replied to, social media browsing to see what the world is up to for the day, read 1 or 2 industry articles, catch up on any current news
- 1pm- Usually the first of many meetings of the day
- Note: Phone call often interrupt all throughout the day while scheduling next day meetings and follow ups
- 5pm -Some sort of crisis takes place that needs to be dealt with
- 7pm -Off to support an event, attend a networking soiree, accompanying a client to an appearance
- 11pm- where the “work” day usually begins.
What part did your personal brand play in getting you to where you are today?
My outgoing personality has always lead to conversations of some sort. Meeting so many different people has allowed my network to grow and I am able to connect people to each other who may not have made the connection themselves. Mastering the plug and being a creative person has lead to concepts being born. Being a publicist and brand manager has allowed those skills to be prevalent when it comes to bringing a client’s idea to life.
Describe a failure that you have experienced and what you did to recover:
As an entrepreneur, failures are the hidden gem and the best teachers of all. A huge lesson learned was to make sure I never ever launch, publish, promote or expose anything prematurely. Whatever it is you choose to do, make sure to do your research. I cannot express enough how important it is to learn about the respective industry you want to pursue. Even having a conversation or scheduling an informational interview with some key players can easily be the determining factor in your success. I recovered because I altered. Understand that not everything works and it is OK.
How did you garner press coverage and media attention?
I am a walking billboard. I try to be as strategic as possible in what I do and let it garner attention on its own. It feels awesome when people contact you because they want to know more or get involved.
What has been the greatest opportunity you have been offered?
I have had so many wonderful opportunities, but my most current is having been appointed as the Director of Marketing and Branding for a project in conjunction with a Hot 97 media personality.
What keeps you going?
My hunger to be the greatest at what I do. I am inspired easily; so daily reminders from just life’s happenings push me. I love the background stories about how successful people have made it. Some of them are totally motivating because they illustrate that how you start doesn’t actually determine how it ends. It’s in your power to author your story.
Who are some of your mentors and why?
I find mentorship as I see fit. I am currently trying to find a professional mentor that can help guide some of my goals. A challenge for me was finding someone in my vast network to actually utilize and become part of my team. You always need a team. Knowing what exactly it is you need assistance with should be clear when seeking a mentor.
What were the steps you took in college that impacted your professional success?
My undergraduate years in college were mostly made up of me trying to refine what exactly I wanted to do. I had an idea, but it was not clear-cut. When it was finally time to graduate, I had figured it out — or so I thought. A year after, I got my MBA in Media Management. It was during my masters program that I experienced and implemented exactly what I wanted to do and began piecing my ideas together. Don’t beat yourself up if you do not know what exactly you want to do, but once you find what you are passionate about, never stop nurturing it.
What would you say to a young person who wants to work in your industry?
Dive in as soon as you get the chance. Intern, volunteer, be involved. The media world is all about who you know. Create, establish and foster those relationships while you are still in school. Take advantage of your summers and begin working on your personal brands, blog, digital portfolio, production of writing samples etc. Let people know what it is you want to do so that they keep you in mind when opportunities arise.
Words of Advice for Young Professionals:
The power of a THANK YOU is immense. Remember what people did for you. Always pay it forward. Make sure to never stop learning. Introduce yourself to the unknown and get out of your comfort zone.
What can we expect from you in the near future?
I have a few different projects coming up that are still in the preliminary stages, but I’ll be sure to keep you updated on them via my social media sites where I will be making official announcements. I do want to design my own watch collection, but this is the first time ever I am saying this out loud and publicly. It was just a thought, but I guess it’s a good idea to put it out into the universe.
